Experience
Service in a wide range of industries provides a unique perspective. Water damage from burst water lines is an expensive problem in skyscrapers and apartment complexes. In the southern United State many fire suppression systems exist in unheated spaces and are prone to freezing during cold spells.
Aircraft manufactuers are always looking for ways to reduce weight. For example by replacing heavy electromechanically controlled valve actuators with much smaller, and lighter, solid-state controlled units that use modern high efficiency DC brushed and brushless motors.
- 2022–Present: Kairos Water - modernizing the insurance industry, offering protection from water damage with large networks of wireless sensors, valves, and equipment controllers. Development of battery powered LoRaWAN products. Extensive design, modeling, implementation, testing, and in-sourcing of wireless sensors, controllers, battery backup systems. Research and Development. Patent Work. Design of custom connectors, flexible sensors. 3D Modeling and prototyping. Modification and instrumentation of LoRaWAN gateways via firmware/software, Addition of features and bugfixes to ChirpStack LNS. Customization of memory protected RTOS and development of application level communications protocols/libraries targeting ARM microcontrollers and backend severs. Extensive use of AWS services. Development of real time database (“cloud”) applications for the control, monitoring, and statistical analysis of large networks of wireless sensors, controller, valves, and equipment with sophisticated protocol and state management logic. Creation of requirements, tests, procedures, diagrams and related documentation.
- 2017–2022: Western Reserve Controls - serving aerospace and industrial customers. Design, implementation, and modernization of systems for various Aerospace customers such as NASA, Boeing, Honda Jet, etc. in accordance to DO-160G and other standards (numerous fuel/hydraulic valves, water level controller/heater, oil level/temperature sensor). Extensive modeling work in SPICE circuit simulators. Mitigation against lightening strikes, load dumps, and other transients. Numerous Ethernet and CAN bus based IO cards (RTOS and bare metal) including white labels for the Rockwell Automation (Allen-Bradley) and their PLC ecosystem. Misc. internal applications and work with integrating ERP system with CAD software. Creation of requirements, tests, procedures, diagrams and related documentation.

Education
- MS in Applied Artificial Intelligence: Neumont University. (In progress, see 11 Expected completion in 2027)
- BS in Electrical Engineering: Akron University.
Additional Information
Accomplishments suggestive of character. Example of a robot participating in FIRST robotics competitions.
- Eagle Scout.
- Former student president of Medina Highschool Robotics Club.
- Severed as webmaster for various non-profit and for-profit organizations. Moderator/admin of local community’s social media group.
- At various point in time engaged in a wide range of hobbies: metal casting, machining, 3D printing, video game programming, etching circuit boards, competitive robotics, etc.
- Started doing commercial firmware work my junior year of highschool. Moved on to electrical design work by my senior year. The PCBs and PIC microcontroller based systems I made for highschool robotics club and regional competitions were very similar to the controllers that Interactive Engineering Corp. made for the food and beverage industry.
- Made it though college debt free via design work and firmware programming at Interactive Engineering and Western Reserve Controls (naturally a part time student accepts vastly lower wages than an outside contractor; very fortunate to have had the right connections).
- Started college in highschool. Replaced many of my classes through the PSEO program. Graduated highschool with 54 credit hours earned “for free”.
Other notes.
- I’ve spent most of my time upstream on the design and development side of projects. I often get tasked with providing guidance to others, writing and interpreting requirements and documentation, inspecting other’s work for soundness, doing approvals, etc.
- The work I’ve done falls under various titles: Electrical Engineer, Firmware Engineer, Lead Engineer, Design Engineer, Circuit Designer, PCB Designer, Software Engineer, Database Application Engineer, Cloud Engineer, etc. A virtue of working at smaller engineering firms is that I’ve worn many hats.
- Big fan of programmatically modeling and verifying assumptions about complicated (or just “big”) systems
